How to analyze Microsoft stock as a beginner
Updated September 7, 2026 · Education, not a price target
Microsoft is easy to like. You already pay for some of it. That is also the trap: a product you use is not the same as a business you have read. This page is a five-question checklist. The MSFT stock page is the shorter product walkthrough. Finorify is the stock analysis app you use to answer the questions.
1. Can you split subscriptions from the cloud build-out?
One part of Microsoft is software people renew: Office, security, and other seats. Another part is Azure and the data centers behind it. Those engines can grow at different speeds. If your whole thesis is “everyone will use Copilot,” you are trading a story. Write one sentence for the subscription pile and one for cloud. If you cannot, you are not ready for the price.
2. Does cash still show up after the build?
Cloud stories spend cash now to earn later. That can be fine. It should be visible. Open earnings next to free cash flow. If profit looks fat and cash does not, stop. Ask whether capital spending ate the year, and whether you are willing to wait. Do not paper over it with a brand you already pay for.
3. Are you using “AI” as a substitute for the chart?
AI is a claim about future demand. The filing still has to show revenue and cash today. If the only new fact you have is a demo, you do not yet have an analysis. Read the multi-year lines first. Then decide if the story is extra, or if it is doing all the work.
4. What does the scorecard actually summarize?
The quality scorecard compresses many filing lines so you do not drown. Use it after the charts, not instead of them. If a term is new, open the help sheet. Then go back to the chart. A green summary is not permission to skip cash.
5. Does today’s price need a perfect Azure year?
Only now open the DCF. Ask whether your growth guess is boring or heroic. If the entry price only works if cloud keeps compounding at a record pace forever, write that down. Then check the next earnings date so a report does not surprise you. That is how you understand a stock before you buy it.
