How to analyze Amazon stock as a beginner

Updated September 7, 2026 · Education, not a price target

Amazon is a store, a logistics network, and AWS. Beginners pick a nickname: “unprofitable retailer” or “cloud stock.” Both miss the mix. This page is a five-question checklist. The AMZN stock page is the shorter product walkthrough. Finorify is the stock analysis app you use to answer the questions.

1. Can you split the store from AWS?

The store can look low-margin and still throw off cash after ads and third-party fees. AWS can look like the profit engine and still need servers. Write one sentence for retail and logistics, and one for cloud. If you cannot keep them apart, you will misread a good AWS year as a good Amazon year, or the reverse.

2. Does cash show up after the build?

Amazon spends on warehouses and data centers. That can be investment. It can also be a treadmill. Open earnings next to free cash flow across more than one year. A fat sales line that does not become cash needs a reason you can say out loud. Do not call the company cheap or expensive until you have that sentence.

3. Are you using Prime Day as a substitute for the year?

A sale week is a headline. The filing is the year. If the only new fact you have is a Prime event or a delivery promise, you do not yet have an analysis. Read multi-year revenue and cash first. Then decide if the event is extra.

4. What does the scorecard actually summarize?

The quality scorecard compresses many filing lines so you do not drown. Use it after the charts, not instead of them. A green summary is not permission to skip the store-versus-cloud split. If a term is new, open the help sheet, then go back to the chart.

5. Does today’s price need a perfect AWS year?

Only now open the DCF. Ask whether your growth guess is boring or heroic. If the entry only works if cloud keeps compounding and the store stays a rounding error, write that down. Then check the next earnings date. That is how you understand a stock before you buy it.
